DUBLIN, Ireland: Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng will enter the Irish market next year with its G6 SUV, a Tesla Model Y-sized electric vehicle, marking its first step into Ireland.

Motor Distributors Limited (MDL), known for importing Mercedes-Benz, Smart, and BYD cars to Ireland, announced it would introduce the Xpeng lineup to Irish buyers, starting with the G6.

The G6 offers battery options of lithium-iron phosphate and lithium-ion, providing ranges between 435km and 570km. A standout feature is its 800-volt fast-charging capability, allowing for 200kW to 280kW charging, making it one of the fastest-charging models in its class.

In addition to the G6, Xpeng's expanding lineup includes the compact P5 sedan, the larger P7 sedan, the X9 MPV, and additional SUVs. While MDL has not confirmed which other models will follow, it has mentioned the P7 sedan as a potential addition, with plans for right-hand drive production of all Xpeng vehicles under review.

Xpeng is positioned as a more affordable alternative to Tesla, and in Europe, the G6 is typically priced lower than the Model Y. However, the EU's new Chinese electric car tariffs, which could add up to 45% in import duties, may impact this price advantage.

Xpeng's vice-chair and co-president, Brian Gu, said, "Our partnership with Motor Distributors Limited marks an important step in Xpeng's global expansion. We are excited to introduce Irish consumers to a new standard in electric mobility, combining innovative technology with exceptional design to deliver an unparalleled experience that meets the demands of today's drivers. With a vision for AI-defined mobility, we aim to revolutionize the driving experience in Ireland, making it safer, smarter, more sustainable, and more pleasant in the near future."

MDL CEO Paddy Finnegan noted that Xpeng's entry will provide Irish consumers with a high-quality, eco-friendly choice. He highlighted Xpeng's design, technology, and build quality as key appeals for European buyers seeking innovative electric vehicle options.

Xpeng has broader ambitions in electric mobility, having unveiled plans for a flying car and AI-enhanced vehicles. While these innovations are still in development, Xpeng is reportedly constructing a factory to produce a "two-element flying car," a van-like vehicle with a detachable drone capable of autonomous flying. Production is planned to begin in the coming years, with around 10,000 units annually.

Though MDL has not yet confirmed which of its dealerships will carry Xpeng, it is expanding its dealer network to ensure strong representation across its brands. The G6 SUV, however, is expected to be available for Irish buyers starting in 2025.
